Yesterday I took a class in the statistical software SAS. I got to miss work for it, and it was a shorter day than normal. It wasn’t the greatest class I’ve ever taken, but a little exposure to new things never hurts. I also got a free potbelly sandwich out of it, so no complaints there.

Today I’m fixin’ to get a new book or two to read on my daily commute. I’m also going to try and get the majority of the sight seeing I want to do in DC finished up in these first few weekends… but we’ll see how that actually goes. I managed to stop by the Lincoln memorial yesterday, and I’ve got a trip to Smithsonian American art museum and the national botanic gardens planned for this afternoon.

I see houses like these all over the place in Foggy Bottom near Georgetown. Aren’t they kinda cute?

Today was my second day of work. No computer access yet, and I can’t move freely about my building because I don’t have an access badge… but my work hasn’t been all that challenging yet either. The monotony of reading up on terms and acronyms used in every day office jargon is a lot easier to take when you’ve got a friendly boss and nice folks throughout the office.

It’s been an interesting two days, though. I do little things around the office to keep myself busy and make my position seem important. I have in my possession several previously published books and pamphlets to read up on. Although they contain no sensitive data, I guard these documents as if they were privileged information. Once I found the key to the filing cabinets with adorn my cubicle, I realized my self-empowerment. Temporarily with a cubicle all to myself, I cautiously squirrel away these precious bits of public knowledge in all available office storage space, hoarding my bounty from the prying eyes of certain and perilous theft.

At the end of the day, I make certain to take the keys to said filing cabinets with me with ALL documents stored securely with care. It’s not an easy job to pretend you’re important – but someone’s got to do it.

I got together with by my brother in law’s folks today. The plan was to take the Metro out and meet them at the end of the line closest to their place… only I decided to jump on the wrong train. Instead of nabbing the orange line headed out to Vienna, I found myself heading south of town on the blue line instead.

It was about 50 minutes before I figured it out.

I managed to get back on track, and they were kind enough to wait for me at the end of the orange line while I made my way back to where I should have gone. We had lunch and then I got hooked up with a few housewares that I needed. They also took me to the grocery store. I’m finally all settled in.

After going for an evening walk down Pennsylvania avenue, my roommate and I gawked at folks touring the National mall on Segways. Even without being the nation’s capital, this city’s got some sites.
